Fetcher Dog Diary! 28th July-3rd August

This week has been a really tough one for everyone at the centre. Jimmy, a little Angel that we rescued from the pound a few months ago went in for a routine neuter and had a reaction to the sedation causing him to aspirate (regurgitate liquid up from his stomach) which went into his lungs. This caused aspiration pneumonia and left him in critical condition immediately. Jimmy was struggling to breathe and by ten o’clock that evening couldn’t be out of an oxygen tank without going downhill and the vets warned us that he may not make it through the night. Jimmy is a wonderful boy and even though he was scared and nervous in the pound, he had come on leaps and bounds in our care and had a home lined up for him. Luckily, he pulled through and has been slowly recovering since. Every day has been filled with calls to the vets, tears and worry for our team and Jimmy has been given the best care we could hope for. Jimmy still has a long way to go but his lungs are slowly clearing and he is gaining strength. He is still regurgitating some food which is a risk as it could go into his lungs again and it means he isn’t currently getting enough nutrition but the vets think he’s out of the woods and may be coming home to us in the next few days.

When we dropped him and Scampi off on Wednesday, we did not expect to receive that phone call but unfortunately we do have to deal with quite regular calls like that working in rescue. Because of this unexpected outcome, Jimmys vet bill is already at £3000 and this just isn’t money we have laying around. Unfortunately we have taken in a few dogs recently that have had larger veterinary issues than normal which has depleted our funds. This is a scary situation to be in as we no longer have anything in our emergency pot. We try not to say no to these dogs as we know most places won’t take them and they get a chance but it is at a big expense to our already very limited resources. If you are able to donate anything towards Jimmys care, please do donate, even £1 will make a difference.
The rest of the week was a breeze in comparison and we had a few very cute new arrivals who made themselves right at home straight away, we had a few dogs reserved AND a couple of adoptions! The newbies are flying in and flying out at the moment but our longer term dogs aren’t currently getting much interest unfortunately. Bug and Flo came in this week and made an impression straight away. They are both such loving dogs and settled into their new environment immediately. Both great with other dogs and the whole team and both have such fab personalities. We are looking forward to taking Bug to an event in Covent Garden on Saturday 9th August alongside Tommy and Daphne. The event is called Westend Woofs and it’s hosted by Bernadette Peters and Elaine Paige. Fingers crossed it will help us raise some awareness and much needed donations!

We had a lovely raffle this week to help us pay off the remainder of Stella’s surgery bills where one lucky supporter would win an A4 pet portrait from Tori Ratcliffe and a £100 voucher for Stocky and Dee. We are so grateful for their support for providing prizes to help us chip away at Stella’s medical bills. Stella is doing really well and doesn’t seem to be too impacted by only having one eye. She just wants cuddles and affection as normal and is back to scrounging food off of all the other dogs on centre. We couldn’t have given her this extra time without your support so we are very grateful for every extra second we get with her.
Sorry for the lateness of this diary entry but some weeks just fly by with a lot of extra emergencies and the diary has to be put to the side when there are more urgent matters to deal with. Once again, we are always so grateful for your support and we couldn’t save this many dogs without you.
Thank you all and see you next week (on time hopefully!)
