Once again, we have been inundated with calls from individuals looking to surrender their dogs and the list of dogs needing spaces from the pound is growing.
I don’t know how many times we have to say this before it reaches enough people to make a difference but we will keep trying.
I get a lot of comments on posts which say, “we don’t put down healthy dogs in the U.K.” and I am telling you that you are wrong.
Not only are dogs being put to sleep in pounds every week but in some of your favourite dog rescue charities too.
We are and will always be a no kill rescue but many aren’t.
The UK stray Dog Problem!
The U.K. is in a rescue crisis with dogs filling the pounds at an alarming rate.
When dogs are found straying, they must legally serve 7 days in a pound and they can then be put to sleep for no other reason than lack of space.
We are contacted with a large list of dogs that will be pts every week if a rescue space isn’t offered to them. This is the current situation in the U.K. and ignoring it will not make it go away.
How you can help!
Please think long and hard before you buy a dog, it is not a decision to enter into lightly and if you do end up getting a dog, please don’t try to surrender them as soon as you encounter one behaviour that is undesirable, please put in the work and help them adapt to their new environment.
So many of the calls I get are from people who have had a dog such a small amount of time and are expecting too much too soon from their pups.
We also hear from people who have had their dogs their whole life and one small mistake means that dog will be surrendered to a rescue when they have known nothing but their home and their family their whole lives.
They are terrified when they arrive and it’s horrible to see.
Training is a lifelong commitment and sometimes things need to be retaught down the line and you need to be prepared for this before getting a dog.
We know many people have very valid reasons why they need to give up their dogs but most of the calls we get aren’t like this.
We at the centre, have dogs returned to us, literally after days, the new owners become surrenderers within hours stating 'we tried everything', these families are abandoning previously abandoned dogs!!
